Overview

Because of its amazing beauty, Kashmir is sometimes referred to as “heaven on earth,” and the Kashmir big lake treks are one of a kind. As the name implies, this walk allows you to view the majesty of magnificent lakes that embrace the Himalayas. Every waking moment provides you a breathtaking and enthralling vista that makes you feel grateful just to be alive and able to see it. Words absolutely fail to describe the splendour that this walk to the Kashmir lakes includes, with tall mountains, verdant meadows unfurling their spring colourful blossoms, and lakes like melting azure diamonds. However, due to the ever-changing environment and the fact that beauty comes at a cost, Kashmir, like the rest of the world, reveals its hidden treasures to those who are patient and dedicated. Because the Kashmir big lake treks are moderate to challenging, beginner trekkers are frequently encouraged to learn the skills and experience that the walk requires. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is a little simpler for experienced trekkers, but it’s still a challenge. However, all of the difficulties are worth it since you will be watching nature embodying bits of heaven in every corner. Meadows with pine and maple trees, pathways leading to tranquil alpine lakes, valleys with sheep grazing and the wind blowing.

Trek Itinerary

At Srinagar, the gang will meet. We will begin travelling from Srinagar to Sonamarg, where Shitkari village serves as the ideal base camp for the Kashmir big lakes trek, after a quick introduction by your trek guide who will share all of the important data about what the trekking adventure comprises.

We'll leave after an early morning meal and drive to Nichnai, where we'll set up camp. The entire trek transports you to Kashmir, a bit of beauty. The route is lined with maple and pine trees, and as you rise, the spectacular Sonamarg Valley panorama comes into view. Streams of water run continuously, giving way to Shekdur's beautiful green meadows, ornamented by little peaks and surrounded by Bhoj trees, making it a stunning halt to take a rest and marvel at nature's wonders. We'll arrive at our campground, where we'll eat supper and spend the night, following the flow of water from the Nichnai stream.

After an early morning meal, we'll go to the beautiful Vishansar Lake. For Kashmiri pandits, the lake is of paramount importance, and the surrounding beauty of alpine forests and gorges packed with tiny glaciers makes it a fascinating destination for hikers. The Nichnai pass is hidden behind the two peaks that dominate the view from your campground. A lake will appear as you approach the foothills of the Rockies. The pass will eventually come into view as you rise gently into the meadows, presenting you with a breathtaking panorama of Sonamarg valley. You'll begin your descent with a view of floral fields and rivers in the background after witnessing the majesty of this pass. Soon, you'll notice a waterfall pouring down a mountain cliff, and after a short hike, you'll come across a new stream. Our campers will be put up in the open space with the Vishansar Lake as a background. The rest of the day is yours to do as you like, although you may engage in any enjoyable activity. Dinner will be followed by a night at the campground.

We proceed with caution since the weather around Kishansar Lake is unpredictable. If the weather does not allow us to go, we will spend the day at the campground. We will proceed to Gangbal camp site if the weather is clear.

We'll leave after morning tea and breakfast for our next destination. Kishansar lake is located directly above Vishansar lake, at a height of 500 feet above sea level. This is a sight to behold, with its gorgeous sceneries of lush meadows and crystal blue lakes. Soon, the ridge that is Gadsar Pass will appear in front of you. After a little more wandering, you'll come upon a little lake known as Yamsar, which has mythical importance in hinduism and is linked with the deity of death, Yama. As you progress and the foot of the snow-capped cliffs comes into view, you will notice a beautiful lake, which is Gadsar Lake. We will go a little farther after taking in the lovely view and then set up our campsite. Dinner will be followed by an overnight stay in the campers.

Following our morning tea and breakfast, we will depart the campground for our next destination, Satsar camp, which is located at an elevation of 12,000 feet and is made up of seven lakes, the majority of which may be seen depending on the season. You'll be passing through lush green trees, rivers, and valleys below. After passing through terrains with magnificent mountains in the background, you'll come to a crest that marks the entrance to Satsar, beyond which lies the LOC's 3rd line of defence as well as the Satsar Army camp. We'll set up our campground a few metres away and relax in the peace and quiet. Dinner will be served, followed by an overnight stay in the campgrounds.

After breakfast, we'll set off on our trekking adventure, which will include both ascents and descents. With endless ridges and unnamed lakes, the trail is full of surprises. After passing through all of them, you'll arrive to Gangabal, the largest of them all, with Nundkol nearby. The Nundkhol lake is located near the base of the Harmukh peak, where the Harmukh glacier clings to the mountain's sides. After supper, we'll set up our campground here at Nundkol and spend the night.

We will begin our descent from the Gangabal campground after breakfast. The route will be lined with green canopies, and you will begin to notice signs of civilisation. The meadows give place to wooden cottages, and Naranag appears slowly about 8500 feet, giving way to Naranag road. From here, we'll travel back to Srinagar. The gang will dissemble once they get in Srinagar. Tour has come to an end.
