Overview
Gaumukh Tapovan Trip is a lovely trek that shows the natural grandeur of the Garhwal Himalayas, featuring a few notable peaks including Bhagirathi, Shivling, and Bhrigupanth. The Gaumukh Tapovan walk leads to the Gangotri Glacier, also known as Gaumukh, which is the source of the Ganges River and one of India’s greatest glaciers. The Gaumukh Tapovan hike starts at Gangotri, Uttarakhand, which is a popular pilgrimage site and one of the Chota Char Dham shrines. The Gaumukh Tapovan trek takes six days to complete and travels via Chirbasa, Bhojbasa, Gaumukh, and Tapovan. Gaumukh trip has a moderate to steep gradient and is recommended for trekkers who have completed at least two high altitude treks. Beginners with adequate physical fitness, however, can tackle the Gaumukh trek because the altitude is not too high. The Gaumukh Tapovan trip takes you through Gangotri National Park’s natural grandeur, uncommon flora and animals, deep forest, river valleys, snow-capped massifs, and massive glaciers.
Trek Itinerary
Gather at Dehradun ISBT or Railway Station at 6 a.m. for the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek. Our trek guide will meet you there, and you will then begin your journey to Gangotri, one of the Chota Char Dhams in Uttarakhand. It would take at least 10-11 hours to travel 304 kilometres from Dehradun to visit the temple. Gangotri Temple is one of Uttarakhand's most well-known temples, devoted to the Ganges River. The temple is located on the banks of the Ganges River. Apart from being a popular pilgrimage site, Gaumukh Tapovan is also well-known among hikers as the starting point for various treks like as Kedartal, Auden's Col, Kalindi Khal, Rudragaira, and Vasu ki Tal. Landour, Suwakholi, Chinyalisour, Uttarkashi, Gangnani, Harshil, and Dharali are all stops on the way to Gangotri. We take the Mussoorie road from Dehradun for the Gaumukh Tapovan Trek and turn right just before 5 km from Mussoorie to travel towards Suwakholi on the Dhanaulti route. After going right, the road becomes narrower. The next section of the journey is picturesque, as it travels through a pine forest. The Bhagirathi River runs alongside the road from Chinyalisour. We continue our journey on the Gangotri highway and stop for lunch at Uttarkashi. The district of Uttarkashi is headed by the city of Uttarkashi. If time allows, we can go to the famed Kashi Vishwanath temple. After going through Uttarakashi, the route becomes more picturesque, and during clear weather, one can view the snowcapped peaks of Banderpuch. Other significant sights include Gangnani, which is known for its hot springs, Bhairo Ghati, which is known for its deep gorge and is highly attractive, and a few more. At the evening, we arrive in Gangotri. Arti, freshen up and prepare for the evening. Because the Gangotri temple is located at an altitude of roughly 3300 metres, it is vital to get a decent night's sleep to acclimate your body. The guest house will be our home for the night.
After breakfast on the second day of our Gumukh Tapovan Trek, we will begin our journey towards Chirbasa. Today's hike will be around 7-8 kilometres long and will take about 5 hours to complete. The hike will take place in a pine forest near the rushing Bhagirathi River. The route is beautiful because it provides breathtaking views of Sudarshan Parbat (21,345 feet). We'll also pass by a few waterfalls and streams, where we'll be able to replenish our water bottles. The Gangotri National Park will host the whole Gaumukh trip. Arrive to the campground in the afternoon and take in the scenery. The campground will be located beside the Bhagirathi River, in the midst of a pine forest. The location also has spectacular views of the Bhagirathi sister peaks, including Bhagirathi I, II, and III (6856, 6512, and 6454 metres, respectively), as well as Bhrigu Parbat and Manda Peak. We'll go for an acclimatisation walk and see the place after lunch. Camps will be used for overnight stays.
Leaving the last of the human villages behind, we continue following the river Supin on the true left Enjoy the beautiful sunlight as you wake up. Breakfast is served, and we prepare for the walk to Bhojbasa. In comparison to previous days, today's walk will be simpler and shorter. We'll go closer to the Bhagirathi peaks on this path. The campgrounds will be set up on a flat surface after the journey, and the location is Bhojwasa. The name of this campground comes from the Bhojpatra trees, often known as Birch trees. Forest checkpoints, rest houses, ashrams, and other facilities may be found on this campground. After arriving at the campground, have your lunch and unwind. At the campsite, we may go exploring or play games. Staying in the camps for the night.
The day has finally arrived for the most difficult and longest trip yet, so eat properly, bring a snack, fill water bottles (there are no water sources along the path), bring energy bars, and be ready to be delighted. From here, the route becomes steeper and more full of rock boulders. The glacier's granite moraines make the climb tough, but they also eliminate the need for technical gear. To make the climb simpler, use a trekking pole. The last leg of the journey to Tapovan is rugged, but once you've made it there, you'll be glad to be in the well-known meadows, where you can see Mt. Shivling in all its beauty. Sadhus come from all around the world to meditate at Tapovan.
Early mornings are ideal for savouring the final few moments of the day in front of sun-drenched ancient mountains. Mt. Shivling has never been more majestic, encompassing the neighbouring summits in its majesty. They join together to create a breathtaking scene. After breakfast, it's time to bring these memories back to life. Pack a meal and lots of water, exactly like you did before, because there are no water sources. Yes, the glacier's difficult slopes and moraines must be traversed once again. As you navigate your way around the rocks, you'll realise that descending is more difficult than climbing. Keep an eye on what's going on and take it carefully. Retrace your steps and try to relive the experiences. After descending steeply to Gomukh, continue trekking along the Bhagirathi River. Walking to Chirbassa will take roughly 6-7 hours. After that, you'll return to the same pine trees. It's predictable that you'll be camping beside a river, amid mountains, and under pine trees...!!
When you wake up, you'll remember that this is the last day of your journey. The walk to Gangotri is around 9 kilometres long and takes 4-5 hours to complete. Streams and waterfalls should be used to replenish water bottles. As the sight of the Bhagirathi and other mountain summits fades, say your farewell. At the guest home, you will be served a cooked lunch and supper. Pack your belongings and return to Dehradun, and with it, to your lovely houses.
After breakfast it time to say goodbye to the mountains and friends. It is the last day of the journey.
